A Hilton Head Island man is in the Beaufort County Detention Center after the car he was driving hit a tree and his passenger died.
South Carolina Highway Patrol says around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Dustin Steele, 31, was heading north on Matthews Drive when the vehicle he was driving went through a traffic circle and ran into a sign and a tree. Investigators say Steele was wearing a seat belt but his passenger was not.
Steele's passenger, Francis O'Reilly, 72, of Hilton Head Island, was flown from the accident scene to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, where he later died around 2 a.m.
The Beaufort County Detention Center confirms Steele is behind bars and faces a felony DUI charge.
