North Charleston cop drives cruiser into Berkeley Co. woods

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating after a North Charleston Police Department officer was involved in a single-vehicle wreck in Berkeley County on Thursday morning.

The wreck happened on Cooper Store Road, near Highway 17-A at 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

Highway patrol says the driver of the 2007 Ford Crown Victoria was traveling east on Cooper Store Road when he began to drive off the right side of the roadway. The officer then swerved left and hit a tree on the left side of the road.

Officials say the police officer was not seriously injured in the crash, and they are unsure at this time if he fell asleep at the wheel.

Charges are pending.
