Global spandex manufacturer to close Goose Creek branch

GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) - A global spandex manufacturer has decided to close its United State's subsidiary that is located in Goose Creek, S.C.

Asahi Kasei Fibers will be closing its U.S. branch, Asahi Kasei Spandex America, Inc., in October 2012 in order to improve business results, according to press release from the company.

The Goose Creek branch is responsible for producing Dorlastan™, a type of spandex.

Officials say the closing is due to challenging global spandex market, which has seen an oversupply in recent years due to a decrease in sales.

According to the release, the Goose Creek branch currently has a workforce of 133 employees.

The company has reduced operating expenses for the Goose Creek spandex manufacturer in an effort to improve business numbers, but officials with Asahi Kasei Fibers say investing money into the U.S. spandex business in no longer justifiable.

Asahi Kasei Fibers also has production bases in Japan, Taiwan, China, Thailand and Germany.
