NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A report states a North Charleston Fire Department arson investigator told police on scene Sunday that the fire at a vacant building on Rivers Avenue appeared to be arson.
Fire officials say the fire consumed the structure in the 4800 block of the road. That building is located next to Value Place.
The report also states information about a suspect: a homeless man who was staying behind the building. The suspect told officers he was downtown at the hospital at the time of the fire, according to the report.
Firefighters say they saw smoke and flames coming from the single-story building when they arrived on the scene at around 11 a.m. It took firefighters 50 minutes to bring the blaze under control.
Authorities say no one was injured.
The fire department has not made an official ruling on their investigation into the cause of the fire.
