CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -
After a nationwide search and countless applicants, the City of Charleston Fire Department introduced the woman they selected to run the show.
Chief Karen Brack led off Tuesday's press conference by letting everyone know how much an honor it is to be selected fire chief of Charleston. She also talked about her top priorities for the department.
Charleston's first female fire chief says she's enthusiastic about a new recruit school coming online at the first of next year. It will be a six month program for new firefighters.
However, she says her number one priority is the continued formation and development of a fire marshal's office. She believes it will be the key to responding to fires more quickly and serving the community better as a whole.
"Getting that division up and running and giving them the resources, I think that translates directly to how we serve operations and how we serve our community," Brack said.
Next year, fire station No. 9 will be opening up. The department will also add a fire boat next September and a grant was awarded to the department for a new Hazmat rig.
