SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - A 7-year-old girl Spartanburg County girl has died after being thrown from a sport utility vehicle following a high-speed chase on Interstate 85.
Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger says Queniya Tykia Shelton died at a local hospital at 7:20 p.m. Tuesday.
Sheriff Chuck Wright says deputies pursued the vehicle Queniya was riding in Monday morning after noticing erratic driving. The chase topped 100 mph before the 2012 Dodge Journey struck a guardrail and overturned in the median, ejecting the girl.
Authorities say her aunt, 26-year-old Errika Shelton, was driving. Shelton suffered broken bones.
Wright says his deputies followed protocol but didn't know a child was in the vehicle. He says Shelton should have pulled over.
