JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) -

While many were pleasantly surprised by the traffic flow on Johns Island during the PGA Championship practice rounds, first-round play on Thursday saw a mass influx of spectators which caused delays on Main and Bohicket roads.

Traffic was described by many as "bumper-to-bumper" with typical speeds of 20 miles per hour. Reporter Harve Jacobs said the worst congestion reached all the way to Stono Market, which is just past the bridge to Johns Island.

Once motorists moved past the intersection of Maybank Highway and Main Road, things started to open up again.

Northbound traffic on Savannah Highway was also very snarled, according to Jacobs.  Police are stationed at intersections trying to keep traffic flowing smoothly.

On a normal day, it takes about an hour and 15 minutes to make it out to The Ocean Course, but for many on Thursday, it was much closer to a two-hour trip.
