COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A man has been charged with killing his girlfriend, then leaving her body inside a burning car at a Columbia church.
Richland County deputies say 48-year-old Darrell Lydell Griffin was charged with murder on Wednesday.
Authorities say Griffin came to their headquarters Tuesday to report that he and his girlfriend had been kidnapped. But deputies say Griffin had little information about where the alleged kidnapping had happened and was wet and disoriented.
The body of 44-year-old Johnette Pratt of Columbia was found in a burning car later that night. Investigators say Griffin strangled Pratt, then tried to cover up the crime by filing a false report.
Griffin was in jail Thursday. It wasn't known if he had an attorney.
