CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

The Citadel's Board of Visitors has chosen a former criminal prosecutor to serve as counsel to the board in regards to how the college handled the sex abuse scandal involving Louis "Skip" ReVille.

School officials say Joseph McCulloch will research and present a list of qualified independent reviewers to the board.

McCulloch will recommend three independent review firms. The board will then choose one on Aug. 24 to look into The Citadel's handling of the case.

"Joe McCulloch does not have a connection to The Citadel and has a well-earned reputation for integrity and fairness," said BOV Chairman Douglas A. Snyder. "Along with his higher education experience he is well equipped to assist the BOV in identifying an independent reviewer and facilitating its efforts. We considered a number of highly qualified individuals and are confident that Joe McCulloch is the right person for the job."

In June, ReVille pleaded guilty to nearly two dozen child sex charges and was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
