Voters may weigh in on I-526 completion

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Charleston County voters may get to voice their opinions on whether the Interstate 526 expressway should be completed through Charleston's western suburbs.

County council will consider next week whether to put a non-binding referendum on the November ballot.

The tentative wording would ask if voters want to have the highway completed but not have the state Transportation Department's preferred alternative considered. That plan calls for a lower-speed divided lane parkway instead of a high-speed interstate.

Under the proposal, the wording of the referendum would rule out the need for consent from the municipalities the highway passes through. Such consent is required by state law.

Interstate 526 is also known as the Mark Clark Expressway.
