Ravenel man charged with murder in Waffle House shooting

Man arrested in connection to fatal shooting at Waffle House

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston County Sheriff's office has charged an 18-year-old man with murder in connection to a shooting that left one person dead at a Waffle House near Johns Island in July.

The sheriff's office announced on Thursday that Deonte Steven Brown of Ravenel has been charged with murder. Brown surrendered to investigators a few days after the shooting and was originally charged with attempted murder.

The shooting happened on July 15 at the Waffle House at 565 Savannah Hwy and took the life of 19-year-old Dantaye Reed of Ravenel.

According to investigators, Brown was involved in an altercation inside the restaurant with a 28-year-old man. After the altercation, Brown is accused of taking out a gun and firing a shot that struck the 28-year-old man.

An incident report states that Brown fired an additional round as he was leaving the parking lot that struck Reed, who later died at the Medical University of South Carolina.

The sheriff's office says ballistics comparison of the two rounds fired was conducted by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and confirmed to have been fired from the same weapon.

Authorities say Brown was identified as the only person to have a weapon during the incident and was identified as the shooter by the 28-year-old victim who was injured in the shooting.

Brown is currently locked up at Al Cannon Detention Center.
