MONCKS CORNER, SC (WCSC) - A 60-year-old man who killed his son and wounded this son's fiancée during a double shooting late Thursday night was denied bond Friday evening.
The shooting happened around 8:15 p.m. on Haynesville Road, following an argument between the suspect Johnny Irby and his son, 35-year-old Telly Irby, police said.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found Telly Irby dead on the front porch, Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said.
Police say the woman, who was shot in the chest was taken to MUSC after she ran to a nearby house. Moncks Corner police say while her injury is serious, on Friday morning she was listed in stable condition.
Investigators said Johnny Irby walked into his bedroom following an argument and grabbed a 9mm handgun before coming out and opening fire.
That weapon was recovered near the scene, according to police. Three children between the ages of eight and eleven were in the house at the time of shooting, authorities say.
Authorities say the children are now staying with relatives in Sumter County.
The murder suspect's brother, Gene Irby, told Reporter Harve Jacobs that the son hit the suspect before Johnny Irby fired two shots. Gene Irby called the shooting "a nightmare."
"He shot Telly once, and Telly tried to come up, and he shot him again. Telly fell right there at that front door," Irby said.
The brother also said the argument was born out of claims by Johnny Irby that his son did not respect him.
Johnny Irby is charged with murder and attempted murder. He is being held at the Berkeley County Detention Center.
