WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - Charleston police say a Maryland man was running a prostitution ring and had several women working for him in local motels.
Daniel Burton was slapped with two $50,000 bonds on Wednesday after he was arrested on Aug. 11 at the Motel 6 on Savannah Highway .
Police say Burton advertised his women on www.backpage.com, a website format which was similar to Craigslist.
On Wednesday in court, Burton begged the judge for a low bond. After reading his criminal background, Judge Linda Lombard decided against it.
Investigators say Burton was the leader of a prostitution ring.
According to the affidavit, he was talking business with one of his prostitutes in his car in a parking lot. Police approached him, ran his information and found out he was wanted for human trafficking in Maryland.
Officers found over $14,000 in his trunk. It was money he says was part of his life savings.
"I have seven children that I take care of all by myself," Burton said in court. "I live with them, my mom and my girlfriend.
An affidavit states that Burton is linked to several prostitutes through a phone number. Police say they recorded phone calls he made with at least two women using that number.
According to court papers, Burton told them to keep selling themselves for money and asked about their finances.
Burton's criminal background dates back to 2007 when he was charged with pimping in Georgia.
