NORTH CHARLESTON (WCSC) - The Dorchester County Coroner's Office says a 26-year-old man was charged with a fatal DUI incident that killed his father early Thursday morning.
Police arrested 26-year-old Deon Bernard Nero who is accused of rear-ending a street sweeper with his Chevrolet Blazer in the 9000 block of Dorchester Road.
Coroner Chris Nisbet says Nero's father, 58-year-old Gleefus Nero, was a passenger in the Blazer and died from massive face and head trauma. Nisbet said Gleefus Nero was wearing a seatbelt.
North Charleston Police Department Spokesman Spencer Pryor said the incident happened just after 2 a.m. Police say Nero was driving the Blazer near the intersection of Cannondale Drive, in front of the Cedar Grove subdivision, when he crashed into the working street sweeper.
Two other occupants in the Blazer were also injured, but are expected to recover. According to Nisbet, one of the passengers ran home because he was scared, and then called emergency crews.
Police say the driver of the Blazer was combative and had to be restrained until traffic units arrived. Officers said they could smell the strong odor of alcohol on Deon Nero.
The driver of the street sweeper was not injured.
Bond for Nero has been set at $50,000.
On Christmas Day in 2010, Deon Nero was arrested by the North Charleston police department for public drunkenness. Less than a year later, he was taken into custody by the Summerville Police Department following an incident involving a burglary.
