Not all phones receive emergency alerts

A text message flashed across Preston Leigh's phone at the height of today's storm.

"It's almost like the noise you hear on your TV when you get a weather alert," Leigh says of the accompanying chirp.

The message was a Wireless Emergency Alert sent by the National Weather Service.  Today's message included a tornado warning and urged users to seek shelter.  The program, which sends automatic text-like messages to cell phones, began last April.

But not all phones are capable of receiving such messages.  Though all major carriers participate in the program, only some phone models are able to accept the texts.

"I have a Verizon 4G phone and it's not fair that other people can get it, but I can't because anything can happen at anytime," Austin Jordan says.

I-Phones are also not included on the list of models accepting texts.

"I don't have cable at home, I don't really watch that much TV.  We just have internet.  Definitely the best way to get ahold of me is through text message or e-mail that I also get on my phone," I-Phone user Christopher Thurmond says.
