WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - Charleston police are asking for the public's help identifying a man wanted for stealing an elderly woman's wallet at a Publix in West Ashley and then using her credit cards at several nearby businesses.
Police say the incident happened on Aug. 14 around 5 p.m. when the 70-year-old woman was shopping at the Publix at 1401 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard.
According to an incident report, the woman's purse was sitting in her shopping cart, and at some point when she turned her back to the cart, a suspect grabbed her wallet.
Police say the suspect then used her credit cards at TJ Maxx and Office Depot, both located at 1812 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, and Best Buy, located at 1987 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard.
Investigators say the man spent over $1,200 of her money.
The suspect is described as a black male of medium build with a goatee. He was wearing sunglasses and a blue, short-sleeve button-down shirt at the time of the crime.
