BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (AP) - The Beaufort County Coroner's Office is getting an office building with the county's first morgue.
That will be an improvement for Coroner Ed Allen and his staff who currently work out of a mobile home in Burton that doesn't even have a conference room.
The county plans to renovate a former county office building in Port Royal. One wing of the building will be used as a morgue.
The coroner's office handled more than 1,000 deaths last year. The county has arrangements with local hospitals to keep bodies until they can be claimed by family members.
Creating a dedicated coroner's office was in the county 5-year plan approved in 2010.
