Cops: Teen burglar found on top of roof at James Island golf course

JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Police say a 17 year old who was trying to burglarize a building at a golf course was arrested after a police officer caught the teen attempting to crawl off the rooftop.

The Charleston Police Department charged Murphy Lopes with second-degree burglary.

Officers responded to the Charleston City Golf Course at 2110 Maybank Highway around 12:50 a.m. in reference to a business alarm.

When officers arrived, they found that an air ventilation vent on the front roof top of the business had been broken out. They also found clothing, a pill bottle and a bicycle.

Officers at that point believed that the suspect was still inside of the business because of the items found at the scene. Authorities then established a perimeter and waited for the business manager to arrive on scene.

Once inside the business, the officers say they heard the suspect in the crawl space above the lobby. Police say they realized that the suspect was trying to leave the business through the air ventilation vent towards the rear of the business.

A police report states that an officer detained the suspect as he tried to crawl off of the roof top in the rear of the business.

Lopes was locked up at the Al Cannon Detention Center.
