CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - With area schools in full swing and kids settling in to their new routines, it's important to remember the importance of school bus safety.
When it comes to making sure your child gets to school and back safe while on the bus, Dr. Benji Rodgers with Sweetgrass Pediatrics says children need to pay extra attention to their environment.
He also says parents need to know exactly where the drop off is and how safe it is, and if the school bus has a seatbelt it is important that kids are wearing them.
"When they are on the bus, the bus driver is the boss," says Dr. Rodgers. "We are sitting down and being quiet and we are trying to pay attention to what's going on around us."
Dr. Rodgers says drivers need to keep their eyes glued to the road instead of common distractions like phones, music or the morning cup of coffee.
Another thing to be cautious of, on or off the bus, is bullying.
Dr. Rodgers says if a child expresses someone is bullying them, it should never be down-played and immediate actions need to be taken.
