GREENWOOD, SC (WYFF) - A Greenwood man is under arrested after beating his wife in the head with a baseball bat and then threatening to kill her if she called police, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.
The report said that on Wednesday, officers responded to the parking lot of Lupo Baptist Church to meet a woman who said her husband had hit her in the head with a bat several times.
The officers said they found a woman sitting in a chair bleeding profusely from her head and crying.
The woman told the officers that she was lying in bed at her home on Allison Drive when her husband struck in her the head with the bat three times for no apparent reason. The officers said the woman had severe lacerations and a large knot on her head.
The woman was transported to Self Regional Healthcare. Officers went to the home on Allison Drive to locate the woman's husband.
Officers said they called knocked on doors and called out to the husband, Eugene McCarty, but initially got no response. They eventually were going to use keys provided by the victim to enter the home, when they were confronted by McCarty who asked, "What can I do for you?"
The officers said they were concerned that McCarty might be armed, so they ordered him out of the house at gunpoint and handcuffed him. The police report said that at that point, McCarty said, "Is this because of what I did to my old lady?"
Officers said they found what appeared to be a bloody bat inside the home. They said as McCarty was being transported, without being asked, he admitted striking his wife with the bat. He told officers he hit her with the aluminum bat to "knock some sense into her."
The woman was transported from the hospital to a woman's shelter.
McCarty is charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature.
