Cougars To Play Best Home Schedule In 2012-13

Posted: Updated:
CHARLESTON, SC -

The College of Charleston men's basketball team will play what may be the best home schedule in program history during the upcoming 2012-13 season.

The Cougars will usher in the Doug Wojcik Era with a TD Arena-record 18 home games on tap highlighted by 2012 NCAA Final Four participant Louisville (BIG EAST) in a contest to be televised nationally on ESPNU on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 9 p.m. (ET). The Cardinals are one of five potential 2012 NCAA Tournament teams on this year's regular-season slate which includes a school-record tying 31 contests prior to postseason play.

"First of all, we are excited to have our schedule completed," Wojcik said. "We have scheduled 31 regular-season games, which is the max you can have, for only the second time in school history. We have a combination of BCS teams as well as NCAA Tournament teams which really worked out well for us. We also have 18 home games which is the most in TD Arena history. Having four top 100 RPI teams, three top 50 RPI teams and potentially five teams that played in last year's NCAA Tournament, with two being Elite Eight teams on our schedule, is a good opportunity for us to build a great resume in the non-conference as we head into our Southern Conference schedule."

CofC will commence the season with an exhibition game scheduled against USC Aiken on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. (ET) at TD Arena, followed by its regular-season home opener versus Towson (Colonial) on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. (ET) at TD Arena. The Cougars will then play host to the ESPN Charleston Classic presented by Foster Grant on Nov. 15, 16 & 18. In the opening round, they will face St. John's (BIG EAST), who advanced to the NCAA Second Round in 2011, in a nationally-televised game on ESPNU on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. (ET).

CofC will then take on either 2012 NCAA Tournament participant Murray State, who finished No. 12 in the final Associated Press Top 25 Poll, or Auburn out of the SEC on Friday, Nov. 16, at 5:30 or 7:30 p.m. (ET). 2012 NCAA Elite Eight participant Baylor (Big 12), Boston College (ACC), Colorado (Pac-12) and Dayton (Atlantic 10) round out the competitive, eight-team Charleston Classic field.

The Cougars will then travel to Baylor, who along with Louisville finished in the top 10 in the final AP Poll a year ago, for a Nov. 24, road tilt in Waco, Texas. CofC will remain on the road for its next two contests including a crosstown rivalry matchup at Charleston Southern on Nov. 28 and its SoCon opener at Elon on Dec. 1.

A four-game homestand follows with Louisville, NCAA Division II Anderson University on Dec. 13, Old Dominion (Colonial) on Dec. 18 and Coastal Carolina on Dec. 22.

CofC travels to New England during the holiday break for a return trip to 2012 NCAA Tournament participant Vermont on Dec. 29 in Burlington, Vt., and at Marist on Dec. 31 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., prior to the New Year.

SoCon competition starts off in the month of January with a three-game homestand against Furman on Jan. 5, Samford on Jan. 10 and Chattanooga on Jan. 12. The Cougars will host crosstown rival The Citadel on Jan. 24, Appalachian State on Jan. 30, UNCG on Feb. 2, defending SoCon Tournament champion Davidson on Feb. 14, Georgia Southern on Feb. 16 and Wofford for Senior Day on Feb. 28.

For the fourth-consecutive year, the Cougars will participate in ESPN's Sears BracketBusters event which will be held on either Feb. 22 or 23 at TD Arena with the field being announced in early February. This year's 2013 SoCon Men's Basketball Championship will be held on March 8-11 in Asheville, N.C.

Since becoming an NCAA Division I member in 1991-92, the Cougars previously played a school-record 18 home games during the 1997-98 season under legendary head coach John Kresse, whose name is etched on the TD Arena court. CofC last played 31 regular-season games during their NIT run in 2010-11.

"With St. John's, Louisville, Davidson, Old Dominion and our ESPN BracketBusters game, I feel this may be the most exciting home schedule ever," said Kresse, who still serves as a special assistant in the athletics department. "Playing 18 quality home games in our beautiful TD Arena is a special treat for our players and fans."
