After spearheading a defensive effort which limited Charleston Southern to 263 yards of total offense, including just 70 in the second half, senior defensive end Chris Billingslea has been selected the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Billingslea, a graduate of Fort Mill High School, led the Bulldogs with eight tackles including a sack, forced a fumble and broke up two passes in The Citadel's 49-14 victory over the Buccaneers Saturday at Johnson Hagood Stadium.
His biggest contributions came early in the second half with the Bulldogs locked in a 14-14 tie. On Charleston Southern's first possession of the third quarter, Billingslea forced a fumble which was recovered by Justin Oxendine at the Buccaneer 42, leading to the touchdown that put The Citadel ahead to stay.
On the next series, Billingslea batted down two Malcolm Dixon passes to help force a three-and-out series, and Darien Robinson scored on the first play following the Charleston Southern punt to start putting the game out of reach.
With his big day against the Buccaneers, Billingslea increased his career totals to 137 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and 10 passes defensed. A second team All-SoCon selection last year, Billingslea has played in all 34 games in his Citadel career including 29 consecutive starts.
The Citadel takes its 1-0 record into its SoCon opener Saturday at Johnson Hagood Stadium against defending conference champion Georgia Southern. Kickoff for the Military Appreciation Day Game is set for 6 p.m.
