CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A downtown Charleston park is getting a big makeover. Harmon Field is on 13 acres near President and Fishburne streets.
The first part of the project includes a new baseball field for Burke High School and city rec leagues.
The second part includes a girls softball field and a multi-use field for football practice, soccer and even band practice.
"We're saving a couple thousand of the brick from the building that's coming down to develop some type of marker that talks about the history of the site here," said Matt Compton, senior project manager."Harmon Field has a long history going back to the early 1900s when it was set aside specifically for the African American community, the intent is to speak to the various layers of history of Harmon Field. A lot of which are unknown to today's citizens."
The plan is to have the baseball field ready in February before the season starts.
