SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - In a close vote Wednesday night, Summerville Town Council agreed to increase the franchise tax from 3% to 5%.
The tax, which affects residents' pay on electric, water and cable bills, was approved by a final vote of four to three.
For someone with a $300 electric bill, that means about six more dollars a month.
The town says it wants to spend the extra money on building a new road to connect Sheep Island Road to the Town of Summerville.
The tax increase puts the town in line with the surrounding cities of Charleston, North Charleston, and Goose Creek.
