Stump Mitchell has been fired as Southern University's football coach.
Friday's announcement came after a 6-0 loss Thursday to Mississippi Valley state. It was Southern's home opener and the second loss in as many games this season.
Athletic Director William Broussard named defensive coordinator Dawson Odums as the interim head coach and said Mitchell would be reassigned to administrative duties.
Mitchell was in the third and final year of his $200,000 per-year contract. He compiled a record of 6-18.
Mitchell inherited a team that was facing NCAA scrutiny over Academic Progress Rate scores. The Advocate reports (http://bit.ly/QOPV4D ) that Mitchell's efforts to improve academic performance were roundly praised.
The most recent APR scores showed a 10-point jump to 909.
A search for a permanent replacement will take place after this season.
