CHAPIN, SC (WIS) - Police say a woman who was hitting up businesses for money to benefit a cancer victim had actually made the story up and was collecting the money to finance her recent divorce.

Chapin police arrested 53-year-old Donna M. Winn of Varnville, SC on Saturday after a business owner in Chapin felt a little uneasy after hearing her story.

Winn, according to Chapin police, had been to several businesses in the area claiming to work for the University of South Carolina. She told them that she was selling raffle tickets for a cancer fundraiser.

Investigators said she later recanted that story and told police that she was actually collecting the money to pay for her divorce.

Police found blank copies of raffle tickets in her vehicle with various amounts printed on them. They also confiscated $50.

She was arrested and transported to Lexington County Detention Center and later released on a $2,000 surety bond.

Police believe she has also been attempting to collect Monday in Newberry County.

If you or anyone you know had contact with Winn or gave money to Winn, you are asked to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
