A Dick's Sporting Goods employee has been charged with stealing from the store after he reported a burglary earlier this month.

Charleston Police Department officers arrested 24-year-old Drew Barter, of Johns Island, on Friday and charged him with second-degree burglary.

Police say on Sept. 10, Barter disarmed the alarm code, then used two separate keys to get into the safe room and the safe at the store located at 2070 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard. Investigators said Barter then entered the combination to the safe before removing money.

Employees told investigators only managers and assistant managers would have access to the keys, alarm code, and combination. Barter called police around 5:30 a.m. Sept. 10 and said he found the front door open and the alarm panel disarmed.

He was taken to the Charleston County Detention Center.
