Fire department treasurer accused of embezzlement

ABBEVILLE COUNTY, SC (WYFF) - An Upstate volunteer fire department treasurer is out of jail on bond, accused of stealing public funds.

According to investigators in the Abbeville Sheriff's Office, State Law Enforcement Division agents arrested Johnathan Bedenbaugh Tuesday on charges of misconduct in office and embezzlement of public funds.

Bedenbaugh was the Donalds Volunteer Fire Department treasurer. He is accused of stealing about $14,000 from the Fire Department.

Investigators told News 4 that Bedenbaugh used a department debit card to buy meals and clothing and other things for his personal use.

The alleged crimes happened between January 2011 and July 2012, according to investigators.
