CHARLESTON, SC (AP/WCSC) -
Authorities say a 12-year-old North Carolina girl who was the subject of a multi-state Amber Alert has been found in South Florida, and the man suspected of taking her is in custody.
The FBI reports the missing girl and 38-year-old Timothy Newman, a registered sex offender, were stopped Wednesday evening in Hallandale Beach.
Investigators in Carteret County say Lefevers had been communicating with Newman in recent weeks. She had not been seen since Monday.
Carteret County Chief Deputy Ken Raper said an off-duty Florida police officer on Interstate 95 was taking information on his phone when he looked up and saw a car matching the description posted by authorities. He summoned an on-duty officer, who captured Newman a short time later without incident.
Investigators initially believed both were in Myrtle Beach or possibly traveling along the South Carolina coast.
