CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A man recently released from jail after police say he attempted to steal a vehicle, is now wanted for his possible involvement in a previous theft.
According to the Charleston Police Department, 21-year-old Matthew Dylan Brown is suspected of breaking into a car on September 22 and stealing multiple items, including a GPS. Police say Brown recently pawned the stolen GPS at Georges Loan and Music on King Street.
Officials say the victim's car, a Volkswagen Jetta, was parked overnight on Sept. 21 at the victim's residence on Judith Street. When the victim returned to her car around 9 a.m. on Sept. 22, the driver's side window was shattered and items were missing.
Charleston police arrested Brown on September 30 and charged him with breaking and entering a motor vehicle. Police say Brown was spotted that evening around 11 p.m. in a parking lot at 989 Morrison Drive attempting to steal a commercial truck.
According to a report, Brown was seen climbing out of the van. The doors of the vehicle had been opened in an unknown manner and the van's lights were on and the engine was running. When asked by an officer what he was doing, Brown responded, "I don't know what you're talking about, that was like that."
Police say Brown appeared intoxicated during the incident, and claimed he was walking home from a bar. Brown said he did not work at the company the van belonged to.
Brown was arrested and taken to the Charleston County Detention Center where he was booked and lodged.
