Police say a man who barricaded himself inside a Johns Island home Thursday morning and threatened to commit suicide has surrendered.
Charleston Police Department Spokesman Charles Francis said a man who lives at 1893 Staffwood Road, located off Maybank Highway near Bohicket Road, barricaded himself inside the home accompanied only by his dog.
Francis says the man surrendered peacefully after being locked in the home for a number of hours. He was taken to MUSC to be evaluated.
According to Francis, a Mobile Crisis physician called police at 6 a.m. saying he spoke to the man and the man said he was going to commit suicide.
Francis said the man told police he was armed, and the man's family was outside the home trying to negotiate with him.
A SWAT team, Hostage Negotiation and Explosive Devices Unit all responded to the scene, according to Francis.
Charleston County Sheriff's Office deputies were on scene assisting police.
