Cops: Clerk beaten with sticks during robbery

Posted: Updated:
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Police are investigating after a convenience store clerk was reportedly beaten with sticks and robbed by four people early Tuesday.

North Charleston police spokesman Spencer Pryor said officers responded to the Circle A Convenience Store at 2739 Spruill Avenue around 3 a.m. after receiving a robbery call.

The clerk told police a regular customer told him he saw four people hanging around the side of the store, but when the clerk went to investigate, he did not see anything.

A few moments later, the clerk again stepped outside to have a look around when he was approached by four black males, wearing all-black clothing and hooded sweatshirts.

The victim told police the suspects beat him with "sticks" and took money from him. The victim said he went inside and grabbed his handgun after the assault, stepped outside, and fired several shots into the air.

The victim said three of the suspects fled towards Clements Avenue and the fourth fled towards Burton Lane.

Video from the scene suggests the suspects discarded some of their clothing as they ran off.

If you have any information regarding this suspect, call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
