EDISTO ISLAND, SC (WCSC) -

A school bus fire prompted a closure on Highway 174 on Edisto Island on Thursday.

Charleston County Sheriff's Office Major Jim Brady said deputies and St. Paul's Fire Department crews responded to the fire at 2164 Highway 174, near Blue House Road, at 2:45 p.m.  The road was reopened around 4 p.m.

Brady said the bus was quickly evacuated and no one was injured.

Officials with Durham Bus Services said the bus was taking 30 students home from Baptist Hill High School.  All of those students are home now, according to officials.

Durham Bus Services officials were not able to identify a cause of the fire yet.  They said the bus driver heard a strange noise, pulled over, and then saw flames and evacuated the bus immediately.
