Citadel grad gets 12 years for Puerto Rico carjacking

PUERTO RICO (WCSC) -

A 37-year-old Citadel graduate and convicted sex offender was sentenced in federal court in Puerto Rico on Thursday.

Michael Arpaio will spend more than 12 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to aiding and abetting in a deadly carjacking.

He also pleaded guilty in 2009 to failing to register as a sex offender. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison and was indicted in the carjacking case while serving that sentence.

It's unclear what affect Arpaio's sentence will have on a pending lawsuit against him and The Citadel in connection with alleged sexual abuse at the military college's summer camp.

He was a counselor at the citadel summer camp between 1995 and 2001, and pleaded guilty to indecent assault and other charges in 2003.
