Car crashes into downtown gas meter

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Firefighters evacuated homes along Allway Street in downtown Charleston after a car backed into a gas meter near the Gadsden Green Housing Complex.

City of Charleston Fire Department spokesman Mark Ruppel said a car hit a gas meter attached to the side of a building on Allway Street around 4:45 p.m. Saturday.

Officials with the South Carolina Electric & Gas company were called out to the scene to make repairs.

The Charleston Police Department evacuated residents in the area as a precaution. According to the police all repairs have been made and the scene was cleared at around 7p.m.

No injuries were reported as a result of the accident.
