COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Police arrested a 35-year-old man accused of driving his car through a safety checkpoint and crashing into a fence during a car chase in Walterboro Wednesday night.
The Walterboro Public Safety Department charged William Lemont Cox with driving under suspension third-offense, reckless driving, obstructing a law enforcement officer, leaving the scene and improper vehicle license.
Police were conducting a safety checkpoint at the intersection of Robertson Boulevard and North Lemacks Street when Cox pulled up with his 1994 Mustang.
Officers then asked Cox for his driver's license.
An incident report states that as Cox reached back "as if he was attempting to locate his driver's licence," he accelerated through the checkpoint.
