Police arrest man accused in downtown assault, burglary

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

The Charleston Police Department has arrested a 21-year-old man accused of attacking a man outside his downtown apartment.

Authorities charged Chez Khaliel Hayward with strong armed robbery, first-degree burglary and second-degree assault and battery.

The incident happened on Monday at 11 p.m. when the victim answered a knock at his door.

Police say three men then asked the victim to step outside.

According to investigators, when the victim refused, the three suspects grabbed him, forced him outside and started kicking and punching him.

An incident report states that one of the suspects told the victim to stay away from his niece, while another suspect took $150 from him.

Police are continuing the investigation.
