ANDERSON COUNTY, SC (WYFF) - A middle school teacher in Anderson County has been arrested and charged with selling counterfeit goods.
Anna Brook Mullinax, 34, of Anderson turned herself in to sheriff's deputies earlier this month.
Mullinax is a teacher at Glenview Middle School. Anderson District 5 spokesman Bill Baker says Mullinax is on administrative leave with pay.
Deputies say she sold fake goods to more than 40 people, including students. Investigators said they were fake versions of Beats by Dre, and headphones portrayed as Monster, Bose and Skullcandy brands. According to investigators the retail value of the items is more than $10,000.
Mullinax said her students needed headsets in class and wanted their own to keep.
According to Mullinax, she discussed getting headsets for students with a family friend. She said the friend told her that her father could get some for her. Mullinax says she bought about 75 headsets from the vendor for students, parents and other teachers at $25 each.
Mullinax says she had no idea the goods were counterfeit.
"This gentleman has been a long time vendor and orders things cheaper because he gets it in bulk and I trust him. He's a family friend and he told me the web site was dhgate.com and I looked at it and it does say they sell things whole sale," Mullinax said.
Mullinax said she did not make any profit off the headsets and that she even lost some money because some students couldn't afford to pay her for them. She says she will give anyone a refund.
"My biggest regret is the embarrassment for my husband and my children and for my students. I do not want them to think they were taken advantage of or that I would ever do anything to make their situation worse at school," Mullinax said.
