COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Two horses were killed Saturday after a barn in Colleton County burned to the ground, authorities say.

Colleton County Fire & Rescue officials responded to the blaze at DC Farms, located at 628 Southern Charm Road near the Hudson Mill community, around 2:45 p.m. after a neighbor reported seeing smoke and flames.

Officials said within minutes of arriving on scene, the 50x30-foot barn was mostly collapsed and a truck load of hay piled seven feet high was still burning heavily.

Officials said firefighters used three lines to knock down flames and then spent nearly 30 minutes removing remains of the metal roof so they could extinguish smoldering embers and burned farm implements.

Crews used fire rakes to pull apart the hay bales and extinguish fire in the bales.

Two colts that were born in the spring died in their stalls, authorities said.

Firefighters believe the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction. No one was at home when it started.

The barn was described as a total loss.
