Charleston Southern running back Teddy Allen (Avon Park, Fla.) has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Football Offensive Player of the Week and wide receiver Larry Jones III (Jacksonville, Fla.) is The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Allen rushed for a career-high 153 yards and tied a school- and Big South single-game record with four rushing touchdowns in leading the Buccaneers to a 31-21 come-from-behind win against Presbyterian College. He averaged 7.3 yards per carry and rushed for scores of 63, 6, 2 and 18 yards to help rally the squad from an early 14-0 deficit. Allen's 153 rushing yards were the sixth-most in a game in school history and the most by a CSU running back since 2005.
Jones III caught three passes for 73 yards to help open things up for the Buccaneers' option game in a 31-21 win against Presbyterian. He had a 31-yard reception on CSU's first scoring drive, and added a 30-yard catch on the Bucs' opening drive of the second half to set-up a field goal.
The pair have been key contributors in the Bucs putting together back-to-back Big South wins for the first time since 2009. CSU has averaged 31.5 points per game in the last two weeks.
Coastal Carolina linebacker Quinn Backus (Greenwood, S.C.) has been selected as Defensive Player of the Week and Stony Brook kicker Wesley Skiffington (Brandon, Fla.) is the Special Teams Player of the Week to round out this week's award winners.
Backus led an impressive defensive performance against VMI with a team-high nine tackles and one sack. He had six second-half stops, including a nine-yard sack early in the third quarter that led to an eventual punt. Backus led a defense that allowed just 16 rushing yards (0.6 per carry), 3.8 yards per play overall, had five sacks and nine tackles-for-loss, as well as two forced turnovers on downs and eight punts -- including punts on the Keydets' first seven possessions.
Skiffington bounced back from last week's rough outing at Coastal Carolina to finish with 11 points against Gardner-Webb on 5-of-5 PATs and 2-of-2 field goals -- both from beyond 40 yards. His career-long 48-yarder opened the game's scoring, and he added a 45-yard field goal late in the second quarter to give Stony Brook a 10-point cushion. Skiffington is the first Big South kicker to make two field goals from at least 45 yards in a game since 2009.
