State Ports Authority to provide update for maritime interests

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The head of the South Carolina State Ports Authority is giving his annual state of the port address to maritime interests.

Jim Newsome, the authority president and CEO, addresses the Charleston Propeller Club in North Charleston on Thursday. The meeting is the largest gathering of the Charleston area maritime community and more than 500 people are expected to attend.

Newsome is expected to update the gathering on the $300 million Charleston Harbor deepening project and the recent steady growth in container shipments through the Port of Charleston.

The authority wants the harbor shipping channel deepened to handle larger containerships that will routinely be calling when the Panama Canal expansion is completed in 2015.
