NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston police have arrested a 31-year-old mother following an investigation into a report of child abuse in May 2012.
Deanna L Brown of North Charleston was arrested Thursday morning and charged with ill treatment of a child.
According to a police report, Brown took her 1-year-old son to Nason Medical Center on May 26, 2012 after the child showed signs of pain in the right side of his body. X-rays discovered that the child had multiple fractures in his right arm.
The child was then transferred to MUSC.
A doctor at MUSC told police the child suffered from a spiral fracture, which is consistent with someone twisting on the arm before it fractures.
According to a medical report given to police, the fracture was a result of "likely physical abuse – arm was twisted by another person who has adult type body strength, causing spiral fracture."
Police say three of Browns four uninjured children were evaluated and placed into the care of their grandmother at that time.
A Department of Social Services representative said that at the time of the incident, Brown had several open cases in 2012 in which DSS was not able to make contact with the mother.
