Fans of all ages got a taste of College of Charleston Basketball as the men's and women's teams kicked off the 2012-13 season with Maroon Madness presented by the Charleston City Paper on Monday night at TD Arena.
There was plenty of pre-Halloween fun as trick-or-treating took place on the concourse, DJ Natty Heavy spun his tunes and both teams surprising the crowd with choreographed dance routines including their rendition of Gangnam Style.
Senior Andrew Lawrence (London, England) and junior Alyssa Frye (Chester, Va.) won the three-point shooting contest, while freshman Canyon Barry (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was the star of the night winning the slam-dunk competition. Barry, who will redshirt this season, won over the crowd with his one-handed dunk over teammate Bart Benton (Monroe, Ga.), who was seated in the middle of the key, and a ball rack off the pass from sophomore Pat Branin (Richmond, Va.).
"It was really nice to see the men's and women's basketball teams interact together tonight," CofC men's basketball head coach Doug Wojcik said. "Our team had a lot of fun with it and we hope the fans enjoyed the experience. We have a talented group of high-character guys on our team. Their attention span continues to grow and we have accomplished a lot in the last two weeks of practice."
The women's team held a practice/skill session followed by a scrimmage by the men's team to end the night of hoop festivities.
"It was electric in there," CofC women's basketball head coach Natasha Adair said. "I wish we could play tonight, but that's just the emotions kicking in. I'll have to wait until Nov. 9. The energy speaks volumes for the community and student body. They are ready to kick-off the 2012-13 season with us."
Both teams will officially open the season in a men's and women's basketball doubleheader scheduled for Friday, Nov. 9 at TD Arena. The CofC women will face Coastal Carolina at 4 p.m. (ET) followed by the CofC men against Towson at 7:30 p.m. (ET).
