LADSON, SC (WCSC) - Investigators say they have arrested two men after the suspects mistakenly identified a man as a thief and proceeded to pistol whip him multiple times.

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office charged 33-year-old Melonard A. Bennett and 22-year-old Steven R. McPherson with armed robbery, first-degree assault and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

On Sept. 18, the 19-year-old victim said that two men assaulted him in the Woodside subdivision in Ladson believing that he was involved in a theft at a home earlier in the day.

The victim said Bennett and McPherson, who were both armed with guns, approached him. According to the victim, Bennett then hit him across the face with the gun twice.

The sheriff's office says McPherson then reached into the victim's pocket and robbed him of his cell phone. An affidavit states that Bennett then dragged the victim across the street and hit him two more times in the face with the gun.

The victim said when he managed to get away from both of the suspects, he heard a gunshot, but didn't know who fired the gun.

The victim was transported to Trident Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The two suspects were identified through the investigation.
