Redeemer Presbyterian raises enough money to buy church

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Members of the Congregation of Redeemer Presbyterian have raised the $1.6 million to buy the St. Andrews church.

The congregation was able to raise the remaining funds on Wednesday, which was the deadline for church members to raise the money.

Under an agreement negotiated by the mayor, Redeemer Presbyterian was given 90 days to match a private offer for the church of $1.6 million.

Church members have been doing all they can to raise the $1.6 million to prevent the St. Andrews church from being developed into residential and business space.

On Thursday night, Nancy Vinson said they were still receiving donations to save the church. Vinson says they are overwhelmed with the community's support throughout the entire process.

"I've never been in the middle of something like this before. Something as powerful as this," Vinson said.
