WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - Firefighters rescued an elderly woman from a house fire in West Ashley on Wednesday.

Mark Ruppel with the Charleston Fire Department said crews responded to 1124 Armstrong Avenue just after 8 a.m. to find an elderly woman trapped inside the home with smoke and flames showing.

Ruppel said the fire, which seems to have started in the kitchen, was quickly extinguished and the woman was helped out of the home.

The woman was not injured and refused a trip to the hospital, Ruppel added.

Ruppel said this is the second time this week where "Automatic Aid" from fire units caused a quick response. Automatic Aid is a joint program where the closest fire department always responds.

Power has been cut to the home, so the elderly woman will be staying elsewhere this evening.
