ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Orangeburg County is preparing to launch a new volunteer firefighter training program.
The program, which is the first in the state, will start in January.
24 county instructors will be available to train over 400 volunteers firefighters, allowing for mroe flexibility.
Until now, training was only offered through the South Carolina Fire Academy, and only on certain days, which made it difficult for volunteers firefighters who work regular jobs during the day.
Officials also say the program could save South Carolina money, since instructors will no longer have to travel to the fire academy.
