Charleston cop charged with DUI released from MUSC

JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) -

The Charleston Police Department officer who troopers say drunkenly crashed her cruiser on Johns Island early Sunday has been released from the hospital.

Officials at Medical University of South Carolina said Monday officer Sarah Fortier had been discharged.

According to Corporal Bob Beres with South Carolina Highway Patrol, Fortier was driving west in her 2007 Crown Victoria police cruiser on Main Road, near St. John's High School, when she lost control a little after 12:30 a.m.

Beres said Fortier's car went off the right side of the roadway and into a ditch before Fortier overcorrected and drove over to the left side of the roadway and entered another ditch.

She has been charged with driving under the influence.

Troopers say she was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck.

Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis said Fortier had been placed on administrative leave without pay.

Francis also said Fortier was not on duty at the time of the wreck.
