JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - St. John's Fire District's fire chief announced today that he will be leaving the department after 14 years of service.
Chief Karl Ristow joined the St. John's Fire and Rescue Department in 1998. Since his arrival, Ristow has worked to improve operational response, modernized the department and helped to consolidate the 911 system in Charleston County.
In addition to improvements within the department, Ristow also aided the community. The department worked to create residential fire and safety initiatives, such as replacing old smoke alarms in homes and adding street numbers to the outside of homes to improve visibility.
According to a release from the department, Ristow will work with the St. John's Fire District Commission to find his replacement as part of a nationwide search.
Officials say the department hopes to find a suitable replacement within the next 60-120 days.
