DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A woman was killed Wednesday evening after striking a drainage pipe off Highway 78 in Dorchester County, authorities say.
South Carolina Highway Patrol officials said the wreck happened near Ridgeville Road, around 9:45 p.m.
Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet has identified the victim as 45-year-old Debra Ross. She died from blunt force trauma to her chest, Nisbet said.
Troopers said Ross was driving a Suzuki SUV when she ran off the road and hit a culvert.
Ross, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Coroner Nisbet said family members told him Ross had fallen asleep at the wheel in the past, and that this was what likely happened.
